ABOUT

Aya-Rosa is an Australian songwriter, vocalist and guitarist from Brisbane.

Since 2009, Aya-Rosa has been traveling the world collecting inspiration for her music, from the depths of the Amazon Jungle to the wide expanses of the Sahara Desert. This period of intensive soul searching and experiential growth has allowed her to find her voice and integrity as a songwriter, while giving her many stimulating experiences to draw from in her music.

In 2010, Aya encountered the Peruvian Shipibo tribe for the first time, which played a vital role in shaping her relationship to music. In a nutshell, the Shipibo believe that the world was literally “sung” into existence and use music in day-to-day life to create, heal and celebrate the life experience.

“As I delved deeper into the mystery, I became interested in how these ancient truths could be united with my own music to empower a new direction in contemporary song,” she said.

The result is a lush and unique sound that brings such eclectic influences together with her personal love of the rock, jazz, folk and blues genres she grew up with.

On 31 October 2015, Aya-Rosa will release the debut EP 21 Grams.

Drawing from 90s indie-folk-rock influences such as Cat Power, Mazzy Star, and the more contemporary Warpaint, 21 Grams offers a psychedelic auditory experience.

This six-track EP was recorded at the Echidna studios near Melbourne, with producers Ariel Blum (The Fabric, Daughter of Dynamite, Cash For Gold) and ex-Tehachapi frontman Constantine Stephanou.

The title of the album refers to the ancient Egyptian belief that a human soul weighs 21 Grams. The record itself, is a captivating exploration of the intricacies of intimacy – discovering what it means to be human through different kinds of  relationships. As she delves into some of her past relationships, Aya-Rosa examines themes of love, lust, unrequited love and love lost.

As for the future, Aya-Rosa is currently traveling the Americas,  from Buenos Aires to San Francisco, promoting her music, expanding her influences and honing her craft as she writes for her next album.
